US retail sales in January increase sharply to 3.8%


US retail sales in the month of January 2022 surged 3.8% despite a surge in inflation, aided by robust vehicle and goods sale. Retail sale for the month of December 2021 was revised to negative 2.5% instead of 1.9% as earlier reported. Sales at the online retail store increased 14.5%.

Auto dealership revenue rose 5.7% after dropping 1.6% in December 2021. Electronics and appliance stores Sales increased 1.9%. Food and beverage stores sales increased 1.1%. Building materials stores revenue increased 4.1%. Receipts at clothing stores increased 0.7%.

Sales at sporting goods, musical instrument and book stores decreased 3.0%. Service stations sales fell 1.3%. Restaurants and bars revenue dropped 0.9%. Apart from gasoline, automobiles food services and building materials, retail sales in January 2022 increased 4.8%.
